What is a French Drain?

An Effective Solution for Managing Excess Water

A French drain is a simple yet highly effective drainage system designed to redirect excess water away from your home’s foundation, yard, or other problem areas. By using a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel, it allows water to flow freely and disperse safely, preventing pooling and erosion.

Benefits of a French Drain:

  • Prevents water damage to your foundation and basement
  • Reduces standing water and soggy lawns
  • Helps control soil erosion and landscape damage
  • Protects driveways, patios, and walkways from water buildup
  • Low-maintenance, long-lasting drainage solution

Installation Steps

  1. Planning: Identify the area that needs drainage and the endpoint where the water will be redirected.
  2. Digging the Trench: Dig a trench about 18-24 inches deep and 12 inches wide.
  3. Adding Gravel: Add a few inches of gravel to the bottom of the trench.
  4. Laying the Pipe: Place a perforated pipe into the trench, with the holes facing down.
  5. Filling the Trench: Cover the pipe with more gravel until the trench is filled.
  6. Covering Up: Place landscape fabric over the gravel to prevent soil from clogging the drain, then cover with soil and sod.
